There have been many faults and many successes when it comes to books being made into movies, and in the last few years, this seems to be a trend. Books we love have been turned into movies that are very, very unlike the book (For example, Percy Jackson and Beautiful Creatures). For me, it is extremely nerve-wracking whenever I hear that a book I love deeply is being made into a movie, because I want it to be perfect, and it's disapointing when the movie is hardly anything like the book. The same thing happens with T.V. shows. Recently, Bitten, which is the first in a series called Women of the Otherworld by Canadian author Kelley Armstrong was made into a T.V. show, and so far, I love it. It has stuck very close to the book. Obviously they're doing something right.
Now, here's a list of Books that we'll be seeing on the Big Screen in 2014. I will add that this isn't a list of ALL the books, only the YA ones and a few others, depending on what it is.
#1 Vampire Academy, by Richelle Mead
I've mentioned this one in another blog post. Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters was recently released on February 7th. I was skeptical about this one, since the director/producer also did "Mean Girls", but trailers can often be misleading. I haven't seen this one yet (though I'm making plans to do so, as I'm not sure it will be in theatre for very long), but I am really excited.
Movie Summary (From the Cineplex app)
Rose Hathaway and Lissa Dragomir are two 17-year-old girls who attend a hidden boarding school for Moroi (Mortal, peaceful vampires) and Dhampirs (half-vampire/half-human guardians). Rose, a rebellious Guardian-in-training and her best friend Lissa, a royal vampire Princess, have been on the run when they are captured and returned to St. Vladimir's Academy, the very place where they believe their lives may be in most jeopardy. Thrust back into the perils of Moroi society and high school, Lissa struggles to reclaim her status while Rose trains with her mentor and love-interest, Dimitri, to guarantee her place as Lissa's guardian. Rose will sacrifice everything to protect Lissa from those who intend to exploit her within the Academy's walls and the Strigoi (immortal, evil vampires), who hunt her kind from outside its sanctuary.
Starring: Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, and Danila Kozlovsky
#2: Divergent, by Veronica Roth
While I was not a huge fan of the Divergent trilogy (I much preferred the sequels, to be honest), I am looking forward to seeing this one as well. It will be interesting to see how the Dystopian society is portrayed.
Movie summary (From Wikipedia)
In a futuristic Chicago, people are divided into five distinct factions based on their personalities. Beatrice "Tris" Prior discovers that she is Divergent, meaning he does not fit into any one faction, and soon uncovers a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.
Release date: March 21st 2014
Starring: Theo James, Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet and Zoe Kravitz
#3: The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green
I first read The Fault in Our Stars at Christmastime, and I will admit that I cried and became rather depressed after I finished it. If you've read the book, you'll know exactly why. I really related a lot to Hazel, as I have Tetrology of Fallot (a heart condition which requires me to be on oxygen 24/7, and to also use a wheelchair whenever I go out, limiting my ability to do most things). While our conditions are extremely different, I related to Hazel and really liked her. I've not read many books like this one, as I prefer to stick to the fantasy types, but I am so glad I finally decided to read it. Mind you, the ending was spoiled for me (thanks to Tumblr), but I quickly forgot about it when I was reading and I was still shocked and upset when I did finally get to the end. Anyways, I am extremely excited about this book. I laughed when I learned that Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort were to play Hazel (Shailene) and Gus (Ansel), as they also play brother-and-sister Caleb and Tris Prior in Divergent (above). I think Ansel was a good choice for Gus, and Shailene was also a good pick for Hazel.
Movie summary (From Wikipedia)
Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel Grace Lancaster has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.
Release date: June 6th, 2014
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort
#4: The Maze Runner, by James Dashner
I will admit that I have not read this one. I have read a brief (very brief) glimpse of the first chapter, but it was a while ago and I completely forget it. I do not really know what it's about, but it looks interesting so I might go see it.
Movie summary (from Wikipedia)
When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. He has no recollection of his parents, his home, or how he got where he is. His memory is blank. But he's not alone. When the lift's doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade, a large expanse enclosed by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning, for as long as anyone can remember, the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night, for just as long, they've closed tight. Every thirty days a new boy is delivered in the lift. And no one wants to be stuck in the Maze after dark. The Gladers were expecting Thomas's arrival. But the next day, a girl is sent up-- the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. The Gladers have been convinced if they can solve the maze that surrounds the Glade, they can find their way home... wherever that may be. But it's looking more and more as if the Maze is unsolvable. And something about the girl's arrival is starting to make Thomas feel different. Something is telling him that he might just have some answers- if he can only find a way to retrieve the dark secrets locked within his own mind.
Release date: September 19th, 2014
Starring: Dylan O'Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poutler, Aml Ameen, Jacob Latimore and Patricia Clarkson
#5: Mockingjay Part 1
Now this one, I am soo excited to see. Actually, I'm a little terrified, especially having read the book and seen Catching Fire's classic cliffhanger ending. I'm actually likely going to be sitting at the edge of my seat, crying, the whole time. Also, I would like to raise a three-finger- tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died February 2nd. He was an amazing Plutarch, and will be missed.

#6: The Hobbit Part 3: There and Back Again
Okay, so I've been watching the Lord of the Rings movies since I was like, five or six (Back then they gave me nightmares), and I am literally so excited for this movie, now that I actually understand what's going on. I have never read a single one of the books (don't hate me), and I tried reading The Hobbi before Part 1 came out, but I couldn't get into it. I will eventually read the books. But I am super-excited for the Hobbit Part Three!!
